Planting:
- Take a medium-sized seedling tray with the moist coco-peat medium.
- Put 2-3 seeds on the surface of the medium & push them inside the medium lightly
- Cover the seed tray with paper or cloth for the first 2-3 days to encourage faster seed germination.
- Mist the seed tray every morning with the help of a hand sprayer.
- If seedbeds are made outdoors, protect them from heavy rain or direct sunlight. With a temporary roof. Water it in the form of a light shower using a watering can.
- Seeds will germinate within the first 6-8 days & tiny sprouts will be visible. Once seeds germinate, put the tray on an open partially sunny spot near the window
- 21 to 25 days after the seed sowing, your seedlings will be ready to transplant in 12 inches deep and 14-inch wide container pots or raised beds.
- Plant the seedlings minimum of 1 foot apart (60×60 cm), from each other on raised beds or in a container.
Special Pride Care:
- Noolkol grows well under full sunlight in winters. (6 to 8 hours of daily minimum sunlight needed.)
- Water your potted Noolkol plant every alternate day.
- Water at the soil near the plant. Use a watering can and make sure that the plants get water in the form of the shower & not by a single flow.
- You can also make provision for watering by watering by drip irrigation system for your raised beds. Avoid overwatering.
- Add good quality organic manure in the soil with a 2:1 ratio before transplanting the seedling. Organic fertilizer can be well rotten cow dung manure, farmyard manure, compost, or Vermicompost.
- Noolkol is a heavy feeder and responds well to manuring. Apply balanced liquid fertilizers or a handful of vermicompost to each plant, every 15 days after transplantation.
- Removing weeds around the plants is very important. As soon as weeds start appearing they should be uprooted.
(110-120 days from seed sowing) 85 to 90 days after transplantation, ‘Noolkol heads’ will be ready to harvest. You can get a single - Noolkol per plant. Harvest the Noolkol when it is full-sized, firm & solid.
- The knobs are harvested by cutting the stem just below it with a sharp knife or sickle before they are fully grown.
