FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS) ABOUT KITCHEN GARDENS
What is Kitchen gardening?
A kitchen garden is a space dedicated to growing vegetables, herbs and fruits so that they reach your kitchen super fresh and full of goodness. Edible Routes tries to continually nudge people into growing their food – even if it is only one pot of leafy greens. We believe every space is capable of growing food – whether it’s a few square feet or a few hundred square yards.
How much space do we need to set up a kitchen garden?
In about 120-150 sqft of growing space an individual can grow an abundance of fresh and seasonal leafy greens, salads, herbs, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, beets, carrots, even zucchini and squash, corn too! When setting up a kitchen garden, space is never a restriction because no matter how small your growing area is you will always be able to grow SOMETHING!
What all veggies can I grow?
The sky’s the limit! It totally depends on the space you have, the sunlight that the space receives, the time you have and your enthusiasm. But even a new urban farmer can easily grow fresh greens like spinach, methi, dhaniya, lettuce, cauliflowers, broccolis, radishes, carrots, mustard, chillies, brinjals and tomatoes to name a few.
Will I have enough quantities to cook a meal for my family?
Yes! But maybe not every day. Vegetables take some time to grow and get ready, for example a single cauliflower can take over 3 months to be ready to harvest! A small kitchen garden is a great way to supplement your current diet with fresh, organic vegetables. Greens like spinach, bathua, mustard, methi and dhaniya often have the highest concentration of pesticides when you buy from the market. So, even if you have only these easy to grow veggies in your kitchen garden you will see a great change to the way you feel and your health.
Can I grow veggies if I dont have enough sunlight?
This is a tricky one, how much is enough sunlight? The rule of thumb is plants need sunlight to grow, some more than others. Vegetables like tomatoes, cauliflowers, broccoli, gourds and brinjals need lots of sunlight to grow. Salad greens can suffice on a little less light. That’s one of the reasons we do an initial survey of your terrace/balcony/garden to understand the pattern of sunlight and its direction so that we can give you an optimum design for your kitchen garden.
Can I grow fruits in my kitchen garden?
Maybe a few such as some citruses, drumstick tree or pomegranate and only if your balcony/terrace is large and sunny enough to accommodate a big and heavy pot.
I dont have a terrace but a small balcony, can I still grow veggies?
Of course! The space will never limit one’s ability to grow fresh vegetables. One may not be able to grow a large creeping Semphali vine, but radishes, greens and carrots can always be grown.
How much does a kitchen garden cost?
A kitchen garden can cost anywhere between a few thousand rupees to even a lac. It totally depends on how much you want to grow, build and spend. We will always give you the best solutions to fit your budget. You can even start with a small section to grow and slowly extend it once you feel confident enough to take on more.
How much is the maintenance cost of a kitchen garden?
The cost of maintenance can vary anywhere between ₹300-₹1000 per month depending on the size of the kitchen garden
Will I be able to look after the kitchen garden myself?
Only if you are super enthusiastic about plants, how to grow them and eager to learn. It is hard work no doubt but extremely satisfying as well. A ten to fifteen minute trip to your kitchen garden every day is all it takes to do all your de-weeding, watering, pest management and harvesting. Did we mention the peace of mind of being in nature?
Will Edible Routes provide me any maintenance contract for my kitchen garden?
Absolutely! We want you to become a confident urban farmer and will guide you through the entire process of growing your own food. In our maintenance contracts we can mutually decide upon the number of visits you would like us to do, including planting seeds and saplings.
Can a kitchen garden cause seepage on my terrace?
If there is no seepage during the rains then there will be no seepage because of your kitchen garden. We use special trays under our containers that doesn’t let water stand on your terrace rather lets it naturally flow out.
How do you grow organically in your kitchen garden?
By using only clean organic seeds and saplings, nutrient rich soil and potting mix and natural and biological pest management systems and products.
Is there a special soil to grow in your balconies or terrace? What is so special about it?
Yes. The soil for balconies and terraces needs to be different than your garden soil. In the garden the plant roots have the freedom to explore far and wide in search of the nutrients that they need. But in a closed container there is only so much exploration the roots can do. That’s why we have created special nutrient rich potting soils, using only organic and natural ingredients to give your plants a healthy and balanced diet.
I do not have space where I stay, but would still want to grow my own food. What can I do?
If you do not have a terrace or balcony and still want to grow your own food, Edible Routes has the option of renting out small farm lands, so that you can grow your own food on an actual farmland.
